Come visit the newest QC PastPort destination in Moline: Campbell’s Island! This small island is now a community of homes and a park looking out onto the Mississippi, and this little island has a lot of history.
The Battle of Rock Island Rapids
Perhaps the most well-known historical chapter of this island’s history was during the War of 1812, when Sauk warriors fought American forces in the Battle of Rock Island Rapids. This battle was a victory for the British-allied Sauk, Meskwaki, and Kickapoo over the American forces. A memorial to this history is on the island and worth a visit.
From Battleground to Resort
Nearly a century later, the Moline, East Moline & Watertown Railway was established, followed by a timber bridge to the island. This was part of the plan to turn Campbell’s Island into a resort. Visitors sat in an open streetcar riding those timbers on a thin metal track. Some brave souls even trekked across those timbers on foot. Once visitors made it across, a sandy beach awaited, along with a bathhouse, baseball field, and playground equipment. Visitors could rent cottages for $20 a month, and families could camp on the island.
